From December 11 to December 13, 2011, Haiti received the visit of a very important members of the American community. Oprah Winfrey decided to pay a visit to her good friend, famous actor Sean Penn. She wanted to embark on the new phase of her lifework. Oprah wanted to visit projects that are making a difference in people's lives. That is why she has been seen in Sean Penn's arms as she went over hills and descended over loose earth and gravels in a Haiti that is reeling from the January 2010 quake. Oprah has decided to use her fame and the power of her name and brand for a good cause. Just a few years after the quake, the plight of the Haitian people continues, but the established media's impact is not there. CNN did a good job reporting during and immediately after the quake. But, its cameras and staff have been busy filming other hot spots. Since the Haitian quake, there have been many other world events that took place. CNN and all the rest of the international media could not dwell on the daily misery of the Haitian people. Nothing to reproach them! That is the nature of the news cycle or news business! Go where there is breaking news!

So it makes sense that important people such as Oprah, Bill Clinton, Sean Penn, Donna Karan and others are carving time out of their busy schedule for Haiti. Haiti needs these people to light an eternal candle for her. She needs investments that will create jobs for her sons and daughters, the survivors of perennial economic hardships and crimes. Everyone hopes that the benefits of these investments will trickle down to the mass. Obviously, due to the lack of infrastructures, many small business owners and entrepreneurs will not be the first ones to see those investments. Better than or equal to remittances sent by Haitians living in the large diaspora, the investments made in Haiti will employ more and more people, thus giving them a reason to say no to risky travels to the States and other nearby islands.

Oprah Visited Caribbean Art Craft Workshop Owner Magalie Dresse

Oprah has an established track record of supporting and empowering women. Her visit to Haiti would not be complete without visiting a woman who is making a difference in Haitians' lives. She decided to spend some time with business owner, Magalie Dresse, who has been running the store and workshop, Caribbean Craft. Oprah realizes that Haiti needs millions of Magalie Dresses who will create opportunities for local artisanat. She realizes that other Hollywood celebs can find true reasons to explain their fame if they decide to work on worthy causes. She is well familiar with the work and efforts of Donna Karan in finding vending venues for Haitian art and clothing.

All we can say is good job to these women for their decision to support this grassroots effort. Haiti only needs open doors and opportunities. Innovative and creative Haitians living on and off the island can do so much more if they are given the opportunity to play with the big boys of trade. So free trade status will help a whole lot.

The same week, Haiti received the visit of many other famous people. Muslim leader, Louis Farakhan, was also in Haiti. He helped bring potable water to a community. Even Kim Kardashian, her mother, sisters and posse were also in Haiti. In order to rebuild Haiti, everyone needs to bring their own little contribution.

BBC.CO.UK Reports Southeastern Spain's Quakes: Two Quakes Bring Destruction and Death to Spain

Falling debris killed some residents of Lorca, Spain. Lots of bricks and building materials fell on people and passersby. The quake measures 5.2 on the Richter scale.

As a result of these two quakes, people are left without homes. Churches and other buildings built with bricks dump a lot of bricks on the street. Spaniards from the capital, Madrid, were able to feel the quake. Hitting back to back, these two quakes caused lots of chaos in the city or country.

"Falling bell towers, walls and masonry brought panic to the streets of a small city that lies in an area known for minor earthquakes, but where residents could not recall such an intense quake in living memory.

The earthquake was magnitude 5.1 and came at 6.47pm local time, almost two hours after a 4.4 magnitude quake had already caused considerable damage and forced many people out of their homes into the city's streets."

Sean Penn may have done a good thing for his pal, Charlie Sheen when he invited him to accompany him to Haiti. In the aftermath of the January 12, 2010 quake that hit Haiti and killed more than 300,000 people, Sean has been living in a camp in Haiti. He founded J/P Haitian Relief Organization.

Charlie Sheen could do a lot of good for the unfortunate survivors of the Haitian quake. Without any doubt, he may have given or contributed some money to his friend's organization, he could do even more for himself and the others by going there. Reaching out to others may turn out to be a healing experience for him. Instead of locking horns with the producers of his famous show, he can take a good break and start thinking about helping others. In the end, he would benefit a lot from this type of missions.

Sheen chatted about his trip to Haiti on radio station K-Earth 101 Live. He said he was going to do everything possible to bring a smile to the children of Haiti.
"I'm going to do whatever is asked of me, whatever I'm capable of, whatever I can do to deliver a little bit of faith and maybe put a smile on a few faces that wouldn't otherwise have it if I wasn't there...."

Japan is being hit by a massive earthquake at the time of the writing of this report. Bridges collapse into the ocean. Boats and cars loaded with passengers just fall into the waters. Nearby, some buildings catch fire. Complete buildings, offices and homes are floating away. Japan news agency reports that there are a lot of injuries and deaths. Where there was dry land does not exist anymorel.

Tsunami watches are going on Hawaii, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Taiwan, Guam, Indonesia, Russia, Marshall island, and many other countries. The island of Panjou on which Japan is located is hit by a major tsunami. The debris and water of the tsunami are traveling far inland. Tsunami waves are predicted to be higher.

It is predicting that the tsunami will cause many deaths inland. A building on fire is moving with the tsunami.

About an hour and 10 minutes ago, a major quake hit Japan.

Magnitude 8.9 quake hit Japan. Roads are destroyed. Airports are closed.

Foreign assistance will be requested and accepted by the government of Japan. The damages are very extensive.

The tsunami has been going up a river and taking away everything in its path: Farms, homes, trucks, businesses, and schools.

Christchurch, New Zealand Quake Volunteers

Based on the extent of devastation, it is clear that many volunteers will be needed in Christchurch. Volunteers from around the world are making plans and trying to find how they can come help our fellow humans struck with such a tragedy. There are many people who need to be rescued soon. Canine rescue teams need to go there soon. Time is of the essence.

The Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Down Jones have reported that at least 17 people were killed. Other reports have already given the number of deads to be at 70.

Huge Earthquake in ChristChurch, New Zealand: People Buried under Debris and Destruction of Property

A 6.3 magnitude quake hit new zealand. There are reports of massive destruction. Water lines break. Power and telephone lines are down. The Christchurch hospital is being evacuated. Countless people are buried under huge piles of debris. Rescuers are going to the affected areas. People are crying and running away.

The main airport is closed until further notice. More information will be posted here as we receive it.

Updates #1: The earthquake hits the southern part of the country. It causes a lot of fatalities. The number of deads is not known now. Many cars are still buried under rubbles. Many rescuers are looking for those trapped by the debris in their cars. It will take days before the number of fatalities is confirmed. What is clear is that this type of quake does cause losses in human lives.

Here is what is being reported thus far, "Southern New Zealand has been plagued by a series of quakes since September, when the area was shaken by a 7.1-magnitude temblor that New Zealand authorities said was the most damaging quake to hit the region since 1931. ..."

Blessed Sacrament Cathedral is severely damaged by the quake. "Christchurch's 106-year-old Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament was badly damaged, and a Herald reporter said that half the building had collapsed. The Herald is the city's major newspaper.

The timing of the quake is sure to produce a lot of fatalities and casualties. Workers were still at work. Schoolchildren were still in school. Traffic was suddenly stopped. And people were running every which way to find safety. The city is highly populated. It was at its busiest when the quake hit it. Countless buildings have collapsed on workers who are still trapped inside. For example, the 102-year-old cathedral had a lot of visitors at the time of the collapse. So did the Pyne Gould Guinness Building. Prime Minister Key is on his way to Christchurch from Wellington. The mayor of the town is asking for help to rescue his people from the rubble. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was located too close to the city. That is why it is going to produce a lot of casualties and property destruction.

In Christchurch, one can find dust everywhere. Destruction of well-known buildings is evident. The landmarks are no more. There are only remnants of some of these landmarks. Various search and rescue operations are under way to locate people trapped inside these buildings. Local authorities have ordered the evacuation of the city center. Two commuter buses have been pancaked, flattened to the ground under the falling of debris or by collapsing nearby buildings.

Dance! The people of Egypt are dancing all throughout the night. They are waving their flag with pride. They are happy to be Egyptians again. Hosni Mubarak has fled. Nelson Mandela is happy that he showed the world how to fight and use non-violent means to foster change in an unjust society!

Revolutions happen when the lowest groups rise and change things at the top. Countries such as Haiti, France, Russia, Egypt, and Tunisia and many others have known and gone through real revolutions.

The Egyptian revolution is largely facilitated by the emerging power of Social networks which allow many groups of people to meet up and organize themselves. Artibonite which suffered from floods and losses of crops was not affected by the quake. It is located in the Plateau Central.

Now, more than two hundred years later, they are being remembered with a sculpture made possible by a benefactor. History does not forget the contributions of Haitians to the Revolutionary war. Without their contributions and many others' sacrifices, today, we may be writing and speaking with a British accent. History is what it is. One can not make this thing up! Way to Go, Georgia!

This monument may well be the only monument dedicated to Haitians on U.S. soil. Georgia makes us proud today!

What Ever Happened to The Especa Brothers in Haiti? Luc, Joel, ... Especa?

Just like many Haitians living outside of Haiti and thinking about friends and family members, teacher and mentors who may have survived the Haitian Quake, I have been thinking about one of my best teachers, friends and mentors. Mr. Luc Especa was my English teacher at College Evangelique de Maranatha perched above 4eme Avenue de Bolosse and Eglise Baptiste de Bolosse. I also knew his brothers and sister who became my friends because they championed education. I would like to know what happened to them. Were they in Haiti when the quake took place? How about the rest of the family?

Since the occurrence of the quake, I have heard from former classmates and friends, but I have not heard from and about them. If Mr. Luc Especa is reading this message, please write a comment to let me and some of your former students know you are fine. Knowning that most of the educated few of the country were killed in the quake because they were either working or teaching brings more urgency to find out what happened to these great minds of the Haitian intelligentsia.

I would have said the same thing about my Spanish teacher, Mr. Reynold for the class of 1986. I doubt anybody will know him.

If anybody knows these great teachers of mine, please let me know how they are doing.

Mr. Especa wrote that God spared his family from the destruction of the January 12, 2010 quake. Everybody is doing well. He and his family are working hard for the rebuilding of the country. He thanks everybody who kept them in their prayers.

Appalling Living Conditions, Median Strip Dwellers, Inadequate Sanitation, Food Shortages and Limited Access to Services

For an instant, imagine living on the median strip of major thoroughfares, freeways, and highways of Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. Millions of drivers would drive by your tents held to the ground by ropes and poles. And you would have to dart in and out of the congested roads to go shopping, use latrines installed on the other side of the roads. You would soon realize that even for the most mundane living tasks, you would come face to face with daily danger from passing vehicles. When you leave in the morning, you are not sure you will find your camp intact. Despite your efforts at erecting bumpers, man-made barriers, using old tires and other debris, a driver may lose control of his/her vehicle which may end up plowing through your shacks. One or two of your loved ones may die or get injured from that accident.

After a long stay in the U.S.A, a friend of mine returned to Haiti and reported that not much has changed from the last time she was in Haiti. In general, Haitians are still afraid of living inside their homes. Most of these concrete homes became the tombs of their owners.

The preceding is not a far-fetched story. It is the reality of life in post-quake Haiti. Haitian survivors who did not pack up and return to the poor countryside they had left years ago end up living in such awful situations right in the face of national leaders and international organization workers who still do not have a plan to relocate these people to safer dwellings.

In article recently published by Deborah Sontag in the New York Times, the current situation in Haiti can be summarized as follows:

Hundreds of families live in filmsy shanties planted along the median strip of a congested road. "Vehicles rumble by day and night, blaring horns, kicking up dust and belching exhaust....Cars hit, injure and sometimes kill residents of the shacks. Rarely does anybody stop to offer help...."

Six months after, a clear rebuilding plan has not been drawn. Six months after, the mountain of rubble is still there, giving permanent witness the horrible event that shook Haiti and awoke the world's response and generosity. Six months after, many aid organizations are still trying to figure out how to best help Haitians. Six months after, homeless Haitians are still sleeping in the median of heavily trafficked roads. Yes, six months after, Haitians are still sleeping under tents which get flown away by the winds accompanying rain. Six months after, Haiti has not been hit by a hurricane even though they are trying to survive the rainy season. Six months after, schools have long re-open their doors, giving a respite to parents who see their sons and daughters being engaged in some type of organized activities.

Six months after, pledges by many foreign countries remain just pledges. Six months after, the coffer of most NGOs is fuller than that of the Haitian government. Six months after, the country has prevented a mass famine somehow. Six months after, women suffer the brunt of the quake's misery. Six months after, cadavers are still trapped all over Port-au-Prince, Leogane and nearby communities. Six months later, there are places that a tractor and other heavy equipment will never be able to reach. Six months later, the National Palace is still in ruins. Six months later, children and women are still walking the streets of the capital without any food and shelter.

Six months later, more than 3 million Haitians continue to live in shacks held by rags and poles. In the capital, the situation is extreme. In most areas, there are no schools and electricity in the camps. When it rains, dirt and garbage wipe these camps out. The water is barely drinkable. Sanitation is nonexistent. Yet, many organizations are doing their best to alleviate the pain. Six months later, UN missions and other NGOs are still waiting for the Haitian government to take the lead. Many of these organizations still have lots of money to spend. Accountability becomes a priority. Many of them only have to give one financial report to the U.S. government. Who is watching whom? Haitians have no way of making them accountable.

Six months later, some progress has been made. Much still remains to be done.

At Least 8 People Are Dead in Southwestern Parts of Haiti Due to Heavy Rains: Rumors about Grand Goave River Overflow

According to various reports, major parts of Les Cayes have been flooded, causing losses in human lives and property. 8 people are dead following the storm.

Yesterday, it was raining in Grand Goave and surrounding areas. And rumors were circulating about the Fond a Fleur quake-made lake water that overflows its bed and rushes down to kill people in the city. The rumors were started by a small group of people.....

In the town of Grand Goave, many inhabitants were heading to higher ground after they learned that the Jan. 12-quake-created lake from the Grand Goave river up in the mountains broke free of the natural barriers. The new lake's water sits among the surrounding tall mountains. Much of the town lies in a dry reiver bed. Knowing now damaging the river can be, the city residents decided to seek refuge in higher grounds. Young as well as old people were walking away from their tents in the center of the town.

No wonder that this situation created a panic and hysteria. Based on the phone calls received by family members, many people were willing to sleep in open air in the neighboring mountains instead of waiting in town only to be taken away or washed away live.

Grand Goave authorities including the mayor and other civic leaders were monitoring the river's flow. They wanted to reassure the population that the river was still flowing in its regular bed. They went to the edge of the river to watch. The residents whose nerves have been rattled by the Jan. 12 quake and subsequent aftershocks were not ready to pay much attention to the leaders' reassuring words.

Many of those fleeing the town carried all their possessions. Most of them were victims of the recent quake. The stampede caused relatively safe people on the outskirt of the town to follow and seek higher grounds. They were sure to find no real refuge anywhere they went up in the mountains. All the homes were destroyed by the recent quake. It has been a true situation of panic to say the least!

Using megaphones, the local authorities were able to convince the residents to return to their tents in town.

According to various updates, the rumors got started by some people whose goals were to rid the inhabitants of their few possessions. Many of the returnees did not find their tents, tarpolin and other small possessions left behind. The rumongers got what they wanted.

In the end, the river continues to flow in its bed. There was no large-scale flooding that killed any residents. The only thing that happened was that some of of the fleeing inhabitants lost prized possessions, their tents in what appears to be the start of the rainy season in Haiti.

Frequent Downpours Signal Arrival of Rainy Season in Haiti

"The rainy season signals its approach in Haiti with a downpour yesterday that affected thousands of Haitian victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake.

“When the rainy season arrives, the problem will not be the people being wet, they will be towed away by the rain,” said Alberto Wilde, director of a non-governmental organisation working in Haiti.

Almost one month after the 7.3-magnitude earthquake, the Haitian authorities have not provided enough shelters for hundreds of thousands of people left homeless by the quake....."

Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) promised Preval to donate 45,000 tents, but specifying aid details, there were only 350,000.

Government order to demolish and turn over the rubble before Mars ends, which is a very hard task because most of the buildings collapsed owing the earthquake.

There are thousands of tons to evacuate, that is why government have envisaged many procedures that include recycling materials and using them to lay the foundations of different kinds of building works.

Rubbles have been already turned over from important building like Haitian chancery in the capital.

Brigades with excavators and loader continue picking up rubbles in the capita, as employees in yellow clothing are working on waste collection.

Most of the ditches are covered by rubble and garbage, which increases flooding risks and epidemics spread.

What CHF International is Doing in Haiti

From Port-au-Prince to Leogane, Grand-Goave, Petit-Goave and beyond, CHF is helping Haitians clean up and start the rebuilding process....

CHF International (CHF) began its second phase of cleanup in Haiti yesterday by partnering with Haitian communities to clear essential routes through Port-au-Prince.

Nine “High Impact Labor Teams”, each consisting of 12 people including a supervisor, fanned out across the municipality of Delmas to clean up key routes through the area. CHF provided teams with hats, gloves, t-shirts, wheelbarrows, boots, pickaxes, shovels, sledgehammers and hacksaws to remove rubble from roads and sites of destroyed buildings. This complements CHF’s ongoing work with CHF-trained Haitian Caterpillar operators who have been clearing large amounts of debris from roads and Ministry buildings since the beginning of this week.

Working with the local mayors, who recruit community members, each team member works from 7:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. daily and is paid 200 Gourdes per day for their work – more than twice the average daily income in Haiti per day and equivalent to $5.00 USD. The objective of the work is not only essential clean up, but also to get people back to work in a constructive way, ensure they have income to provide for their family, and begin to revitalize the Haitian economy.

“We are hoping to employ up to 3,500 people within the next few months throughout Port-au-Prince for the clean-up,” says Alberto Wilde, CHF’s Country Director in Haiti. “Cash for work programs will be essential for kick-starting the Haitian economy after the earthquake and for helping families, many of whom have lost everything.”

“People have lost everything – their mothers, their fathers, their homes, their jobs. They cannot find work, they cannot buy food to eat. They don’t know what to do,” noted Terril St. Louis, an engineer supporting the Delmas Mayor’s Office. “This initiative is responding to their situation. Together with CHF International, we are providing them with legitimate jobs, a legitimate way to provide for themselves and their families. It also prevents criminal activity as people start to find whatever way possible to get what they need.”

Among the workers is Jean Alfred Jr. He is 26 years old, not married, but lives with nine family members. He is a teacher by profession; prior to the earthquake he was teaching at a private elementary school earning 4,000 Gourdes a month. The school where he worked was severely damaged and his house had some damage as well.

“I am here working today to help my country, to do what I can, even if it is small, I can help. At the same time, I am able to get some money to help my family. I am happy to part of this project,” said Alfred.

CHF International is also playing a lead role in addressing the housing needs of Haitians who are now homeless. CHF’s team has created a pilot transitional shelter, based on its internationally recognized model that has been used after earthquakes in Peru and Jogjakarta, and is about to embark on a project building temporary homes to protect families from storms in the forthcoming months, as rebuilding takes place.

Since 2006, CHF’s team has been undertaking the largest USAID-funded infrastructure rehabilitation and job creation program in Haiti, and has been focused many of its efforts on repairing vital infrastructure damaged in the 2008 tropical storm season.

A monster quake measuring 8.8 on the rickter scale hit Chile in South America this morning. This is not the first the country was hit by monster quakes. in the 1950s, a 9.0 magnitude quake hit the country and caused many deaths.

So far, it has been reported that more than 78 people died.

"Never in my life have I experienced a quake like this, it's like the end of the world," one man told local television from the city of Temuco, where the quake damaged buildings and forced staff to evacuate the regional hospital.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 56 miles northeast of the city of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. ET).
Chilean television and radio stations said several buildings collapsed in the city of Curico and that there was damage to buildings in the historic center of the capital Santiago, about 200 miles north of the epicenter."

UNASUR's Pledge to Haiti: Promise of Decentralisation of Power and Facilities in Haiti During Recovery and Reconstruction Phases

The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) pledged US$300 million aid for the reconstruction of quake-stricken Haiti.

The decision was made at an extraordinary Unasur summit here aimed to coordinate regional humanitarian aid in Haiti.

The 12 Unasur members agreed to set up a US$100million fund and also to request a US$200 million credit for Haiti from the Inter-American Development Bank.

Haitian President Rene Preval, who attended the summit as the guest of honor, said his country was in urgent need of help for resettlement, sanitation, infrastructure reconstruction and restoration of agricultural production.

Unasur Coordinator Emilio Izquierdo said a mid- and long-term strategy will be devised for comprehensive reconstruction and job generation in Haiti.

Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana said that his country “will encourage a bigger commitment of the region and the international community to aid Haiti,” but “the Haitians have to be the ones leading and directing the reconstruction of their country.”

“We are convinced that the international cooperation must be efficiently coordinated and it must serve the Haitian government and people,” Taiana added.

Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino stressed it was necessary to strengthen the government institutions of Haiti.

Patino added that by strengthening the institutions, there would be better planning and the people in Haiti would be better organised.

In Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince, Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive said Haiti will decentralise power and facilities in reconstruction to reduce damage in disasters such as the Jan. 12 earthquake.

The concentration of citizens in the capital city of Port-au-Prince was one of the reasons why the earthquake turned out to be so deadly, he told a press conference.

Haitians have long been forced to move toward the capital because government functions were highly concentrated in the city, he said.

In 2008 when I visited Haiti, my friends and nephew wanted me to meet a very special man. They insisted that I meet Pasteur Marc as he is known by most people in Grand-Goave, especially Thozin and Jeanty areas. After being absent from the country for many years, my friends knew I had no idea that Pasteur Marc and his wife Lisa were meeting the immediate needs of the people in that part of the country. So, on a hot June day, we walked down to the compound. I met Pasteur Marc for the very first time. He had just returned home from a foreign trip.

I found him and a few elders sitting under the shade of the mango trees near the front gate. We talked for a while. He invited me to teach some business classes at the compound the next time I get back to visit family and friends. (Well, Pasteur Marc, I am taking your invitation. On my way to Hotel Villa St Georges, I had the opportunity to witness the good work HaitiArise Ministries have been doing in Haiti among the people of Grand Goave, Haiti.

Pasteur Marc Honorat has a great but sad story to tell you. From nothing, he arose. From a child slave (restavek) God lifted him up.

(Many of you have been asking me whether I will be traveling to Haiti. Right now, I do not intend to due to lack of financial resources. Whatever I had, I sent it to community leaders to help the suffering residents of their areas. By serving as a bridge between you and various places in Haiti, I know I am giving my contribution to the reconstruction of the country. I would not be able to just look at all the suffering without contributing some money to get some rebuilding project started. Dr. Ford knew where to go and how to get to Haiti despite the fact that commercial flights for regular and ordinary folks are canceled due to the priority of humanitarian aid and medical supplies. If you really want to get to the country, there are other ways to get there. So far, many people have traveled to the Dominican Republic, then travel by bus to Port au Prince, Haiti.

Many people have written to us asking about how they can go to Haiti to help rebuild. We are happy that they want to help us rebuild the country. We would like to advise you to have a plan. You can be part of a rebuilding team. For example, many schools were destroyed by the quake. You can be part of a brief mission trip whose goal is to rebuild or repair a school. We need to let you know that your group must have the funds to get the project started. So, the best thing you can do right now while we are all waiting for commercial flights is to engage in fundraising activities.

Jan 12 / Feb. 12, 2010: One Month After Massive Earthquake That Destroyed Port-au-Prince and Surrounding Cities

One Month After........So many things to do. The sea of unlimited needs still exists.

On this day, Haitians are organizing a national day of prayer all over the country to commemorate and remember the dead. It is also the time to turn to the living and realize that they still have many needs.

We now have a good idea of how many people perished in the quake. More than 200,000 people died in the Jan. 12 earthquake.

The needs are certain and present. It is time to start solving some of the most immediate problems: clean water, health care, decent temporary housing, removal of the rubble and trash, a solid plan of reconstruction.

In the meantime, Haitians need to start about feeding the hungry population. Better distribution chains of the humanitarian aid need to be organized. They need to think about the youth who has no school to go to right now. They need to keep them busy. In the short term, more doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals are needed on the field.

Despite the medical supplies, many Haitians still have to spend hours in line to receive treatment and care. There have been rumors of illegal selling of some of the medical supplies. The UN is investigating the few hospitals that are charging patients for receiving the donated medical supplies. In the meantime, Haitian health care employees are getting paid by the ministere de la Sante.

In the meantime, we want to thank everybody who has been standing with Haitians by donating, contributing, strategizing and just lending a helping hand or listening ears.

There is much to be done in the upcoming days, weeks, months and years.

They are men and women you can trust.

Let us start with the people, educators, pastors, true leaders who truly know the country and its people: Three names come to my mind: Dr. Jean Edner Jeanty, Dr. Jean Duthenes Joseph and Dr. Claude Noel.

Find out more about Dr. Claude Noel in this report. He is still touched by the quake. The body of his 22-year old grandson has not been found after the quake. ".....When I spoke with Pastor Noel twelve days after the catastrophe, I learned that his twenty-two year old grandson, Emmanuel, is still missing. Pastor Noel said, “He left to go to town just to buy some books two hours before the situation happened, and he never came back, and we have not found the body. There is nobody that I talk to or that have called me who have not lost close relatives in Haiti, and so it hurts. It hurts a lot.”

Pastor Noel was born in Haiti in 1928. In 1953 he moved to Barrington, Rhode Island to attend the Barrington Bible College. While there, he met his wife Lydie, a Haitian woman who was also a student there. He then returned to Haiti and served as a national worker with Unevangelized Field Missions (Now called UFM International) for a number of years. Pastor Noel currently resides in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He said that although “My body lives in the United States, my soul is in Haiti.” Lydie died about three years ago...."

The IRS.gov Wants You To Claim Your Donations to Haiti Even This Year

WASHINGTON — People who give to charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti can claim these donations on the tax return they are completing this season, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Taxpayers who itemize deductions on their 2009 return qualify for this special tax relief provision, enacted Jan. 22. Only cash contributions made to these charities after Jan. 11, 2010, and before March 1, 2010, are eligible. This includes contributions made by text message, check, credit card or debit card.

"Americans have opened their hearts to help those affected by the Haiti earthquake," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman." This new law provides an immediate tax benefit for the many taxpayers who have made generous donations."

Taxpayers can benefit from their donations, almost immediately, by filing their 2009 returns early, filing electronically and choosing direct deposit. Refunds take as few as ten days and can be directly deposited into a savings, checking or brokerage account, or used to purchase Series I U.S. savings bonds.

The new law only applies to cash (as opposed to property) contributions. The contributions must be made specifically for the relief of victims in areas affected by the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti. Taxpayers have the option of deducting these contributions on either their 2009 or 2010 returns, but not both.

To get a tax benefit, taxpayers must itemize their deductions on Schedule A. Those who claim the standard deduction, including all short-form filers, are not eligible.

Taxpayers should be sure their contributions go to qualified charities. Most organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible donations are listed in a searchable online database available on IRS.gov under Search for Charities. Some organizations, such as churches or governments, may be qualified even though they are not listed on IRS.gov. Donors can find out more about organizations helping Haitian earthquake victims from agencies such as USAID.

The IRS reminds donors that contributions to foreign organizations generally are not deductible. IRS Publication 526, Charitable Contributions, provides information on making contributions to charities.

Federal law requires that taxpayers keep a record of any deductible donations they make. For donations by text message, a telephone bill will meet the recordkeeping requirement if it shows the name of the donee organization, the date of the contribution and the amount of the contribution. For cash contributions made by other means, be sure to keep a bank record, such as a cancelled check, or a receipt from the charity showing the name of the charity and the date and amount of the contribution. Publication 526 has further details on the recordkeeping rules for cash contributions.

This year’s special Haiti relief provision is modeled on a 2005 law that, in the wake of the Dec. 26, 2004, Indian Ocean tsunami, allowed taxpayers to deduct donations they made during January 2005 as if they made the donations in 2004.

Paul Farmer's PIH's CHW Could Be Seen as In Home Supported Services (IHSS) in the USA

".......PIH’s work in Haiti is built around community health workers (CHW), a job in Haitian Creole known as an “accompagnateur.” Accompagnateurs have a deep understanding of the needs and challenges of their own communities and care for patients as if they were their own family members. The CHW model not only helps PIH quickly identify where the needs are and provide proper care, but it also gives community members a means to provide for their families, at a time when jobs and food and water are scarce.

Half of PIH’s employees are already CHWs, and in the wake of the earthquake, PIH has hired dozens more to work on mobile teams that are providing medical care and essential supplies in the tent cities across Port-au-Prince. By injecting resources directly into communities, PIH is helping boost local communities and reaching thousands of people in need.

There is a massive demographic shift and resettlement underway in Haiti, as well as a new generation of amputees — both populations who will be vulnerable for months, years to come. We collectively must accompany these victims through resettlement and rehabilitation. For the amputees, the ongoing medical care includes physical therapy so they can walk again; care for their skin as they are bed bound; help bringing food and water; make their beds, and emptying their bedpans.

We must use the same types of systems we have employed to create high quality and durable infrastructure for health in resettlement and ongoing rehabilitation efforts......."

Haiti Orphan Relief Team (Hort) aims to bring lasting solutions to some of the problems plaguing Haiti even before the earthquake. After the Jan. 12 quake, Haiti's orphans' situation becomes worse. PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — A volunteer team of U.S. disaster response experts and orphan care providers is coming together to provide strategic help to Haitian churches. The team will equip and train Haitian church leaders to provide local, long-term care for orphaned Haitian children in the aftermath of the January earthquake.

The Haiti Orphan Relief Team (HORT) is a cooperative volunteer effort of disaster response experts and orphan-care professionals from many U.S.-based ministries that have joined forces to respond to the crisis in Haiti. An initial HORT on-the-ground team will deploy for a two week period beginning on February 14, 2010. The team will work to identify churches in Haiti that can be paired with U.S. churches for ongoing partnerships in caring for orphaned children, so that local resources can sustain this effort beyond the HORT team’s deployment.

“We know that this disaster is not going to be fixed overnight, but by putting in place key pieces of infrastructure, efforts can be sustained and strengthened long after the HORT team has returned to the United States,” said John E. Roberts, past Director of the Federal Government’s National Interagency Training Center, and Incident Command System (ICS) team commander for HORT. ”We are looking to build a long-term solution to the immediate crisis.”

Recognizing that many Haitian church facilities were destroyed, HORT will use advanced mapping techniques developed by the U.S. government to physically identify the church facilities that are best able to provide long-term solutions to children now and in the future.

“We are looking for churches that want to become part of the long-term solution to the orphan need in Haiti. We encourage U.S. churches to come alongside the churches of Haiti to address this catastrophe,” said Paul Myhill, President, World Orphans, and a member of the deployment team.

A Valentine’s Day fund-raising drive is under way to help HORT deploy. Donors can personalize an eCard with a Valentine message and for every eCard sent, the team will personally deliver a Valentine to a Haitian orphan.

According to many eyewitnesses and recipients of tarpaulin and tents from this religious organization, Samaritan's Purse has been responding to Haiti's misery as soon as its leaders were able to fly down there. So far, I have received news about the distribution of large tents in the Petit-Goave and Grand-Goave areas. It is true that the first distribution did not reach everybody, but subsequent distributions were able to reach more people in the Thozin, Jeanty and Chamette localities.

Samaritan's Purse was able to meet on of the primary needs of these people. Food and water distribution are still needed in the Grande Ravine, Tapion, Morne Tete-A-Boeuf, Thozin and Jeanty areas of Grand Goave according to many reports. There are reports about the residents of Ti-Savanne who lost all their homes. We hope they can receive some tents that will give them some temporary shelter. It has been reported that some people can not set up the tents. We hope that some members of the local committees manage to meet these needs soon. Based on primary reports I have received, the tents should provide some type of shelter against the rainy season which will start soon in Haiti.

Homes, businesses and the city’s largest supermarket are flattened and destroyed.

Engineers from the technology community have launched a free SMS information service to help people in Haiti. The program allows Digicel and Voila customers to text their location and their needs to a cost-free short code: “4636” (INFO).

In Haiti: Those with Digicel or Voila service can text “I need water” or “I need medical help” with their location. The messages will be routed to aid organizations and emergency responders on the ground. The service is available in locations only where telecommunications systems are working. Friends, family and volunteers may sign up someone else’s phone number by texting REGISTER or REGISTRE and their location and number to 4636.

How Long Will Haiti Need to Recover and Get Rebuilt? Canada Conference Gave Estimate and Asked for Global Help

Haiti will need nearly a decade to rebuild the damage caused by the earthquake that killed more than 250,000 dead people and a million homeless people, officials estimated.

A top-level ministerial donors and friends conference in Montreal, Canada ending yesterday pledged for a 10-year road map in a major joint-effort to rebuild Haiti.

“The people will need to be accompanied to face up to this colossal work of reconstruction” said Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive and estimated these tasks will require at least five to ten years.

Speaking at the Montreal, Canada ministerial preparatory conference of donors for Haiti which ened late yesterday, Bellerive highlighted the solidarity and cooperation of countries, international organisations and regional groups.

Particularly, he mentioned Cuba, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic , which “immediately arrived to assist our population”.

Hundreds of Cuban and Venezuelan doctors worked day and night in Haiti, providing more than 23,000 consultations and carried out about 2,000 operations.

In addition to the current relief and repair work, the country needs at least US$10 billion dollars to repair the damage, he said.

The Haitian premier considered necessary to go beyond reconstruction and progress towards the transformation of key economic sectors such as tourism and agriculture, in order to channel the country towards development.

Around 800,000 people affected by the quake remain in improvised camps around the city while 235,000 migrated to rural areas in search of housing and jobs, he said.

In MONTREAL, at the conclusion of the ministerial conference a statement stressed the need for international cooperation and coordination in rebuilding the earthquake-ravaged country in the long term.

The statement said that another technical conference will be held in March at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York to coordinate the international efforts.

Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon, who chaired the conference stressed at a press conference that Haiti will play a leading role in the reconstruction with support by the international community.

Participants stressed that the current situation remains dire in Haiti and that the needs are immense while the Haitian people continue to suffer.

Participants recognised the continued leadership and sovereignty of the government of Haiti, reiterating the commitment to undertake a coordinated, coherent and comprehensive approach to meet Haiti’s immediate and longer-term needs.

The participants held that an initial 10-year commitment is essential as is a concerted effort to rebuild Haiti’s capacity.

” Sustainable development, including environmental sustainability, climate resilience, disaster risk reduction and emergency preparedness, will be a cornerstone of our joint approach.”

They highlighted the following longer-term strategic objectives — strengthened democratic governance, sustained social and economic development and enduring stability and respect for the rule of law.

The participants reached a common understanding on a road map towards Haiti’s reconstruction and development.

According to the road map, the participants will restore the operational capacity of the government of Haiti; urgently conduct post-disaster and reconstruction-focused needs assessments; urgently convene an international conference to be held in March at the United Nations, steered by the government of Haiti and supported by key donors and partners including the United States, Canada, Brazil, the European Union and France; convene technical meetings to create an action plan to guide reconstruction and development.

Also attending the meeting were foreign ministers and delegates of the Group of Friends of Haiti, the neighbouring Dominican Republic and major donors and key regional and multilateral partners engaged in Haiti, the European Union, Spain and Japan.

A number of international organisations and key international financial institutions, including the Organisation of American States, the Caribbean Community, the United Nations, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Caribbean Development Bank were also present.

In addition, non-governmental organisations, Montreal’s Haitian community were also represented at the conference.

Founded in the early 1990s, the Group of Friends of Haiti is an informal association of like-minded nations that meets on the margins of the UN Security Council. Member states are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, France, Mexico, Peru, the United States and Uruguay.

Meanwhile in Caracas, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America ( ALBA) announced it will build in Haiti a better health infrastructure that guarantees medical assistance to the victims of the quake, Venezuelan Health Minister Carlos Rotondaro said.

He said that the regional bloc will work in the recovery of hospitals and will push on the construction of a “Center for Complete Diagnostics”.

We have also installed several floating hospitals, where Cuban and Venezuelan physicians have offered more than 23,000 consults, he said.

Rotondaro said the hospitals will also contribute to improve the life of the victims, besides offering health assistance.

Rotondaro said that one of the main worries is the risk of outbreak of diseases.

“We are providing vaccination to the population to stave off outbreaks of diseases, which would be a phenomenon as serious as the earthquake, he said.

In Port au Prince, nearly two weeks after the quake the capital is beginning to show some signs of recovery, but the reconstruction task will certainly take long.

Tons of rubble are still to be collected and excavators began their work very early everyday clearing some of the many obstructed routes.

People trying to recover some construction materials useful to build new houses are also taking part in the cleaning work.

Gas stations have reopened, so long lines seen in previous days are disappearing. Banks and lending houses have opened as well, some of them guarded by forces of the U.N Stabilisation Mission in Haiti and the U.S Armed Forces.

Money is still scarce and those with bank accounts have been forced to use them, so there are many people trying to get to the banks.

Garbage collection is mainly in the surroundings of parks and plazas now turned into camps. In the settlements, there is no TV but radio news on national events can be heard.

On Sun Jan 24, the churches that did no collapse welcomed parishioners.

Haitian Culture and Communication Minister Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue said that only in the capital, 150,000 bodies have been reported but the number of those still among the rubble remains unknown. Some authorities consider the death toll could reach 200,000

Disaster Touches a Haitian Enclave, but Comfort Is Just as Close

SPRING VALLEY, N.Y.

“It’s Jacmel,” gasped Gertrude Nozin, to her one co-worker in the almost empty Restaurant Tropical on Friday afternoon.

She watched transfixed as CNN for the first time was showing video from the port city in southern Haiti, long known for its New Orleans-style cast-iron pillars and balconies, its papier-mâché masks, rich art scene and craft galleries, and now a horrific jungle of rubble in the wake of the earthquake. Somewhere amid the rubble were her mother and husband and other relatives who survived the quake.

“They’re sleeping in the streets, but they’re O.K.,” Ms. Nozin said, and turned back to watch more bodies being pulled from more debris, the repeating loop of the disaster back home.

Jacmel, it turns out, has a special place in the history of this Rockland County village, where Haitians make up about half the population of more than 25,000. It was the home of many of the first Haitians to settle here in the 1950s and ’60s, a good number of them middle-class business people and professionals fleeing the brutal dictatorship and death squads of Francois Duvalier, known as Papa Doc.

They were drawn to the rolling hills and Hudson River views of Rockland County, which, though colder and far away from what they knew, still reminded them of home. And a half century on, they have made this community their own. The mayor, Noramie Jasmin, and the deputy mayor, Joseph Anthony DesMaret, are Haitian, as is the county legislator, Jacques O. D’I. Michel.

They gather at the Konbit Nèg Lakay community service center. They worship at Haitian churches like the French Speaking Baptist Church, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Église de Dieu Spring Valley and about two dozen others in and around town, where the ministers have names like Yves Latouche, Moise Beauvilaire and Jean Duthene Joseph. If you want a lawyer or a doctor or a teacher who speaks Creole, you can find one.

On Friday and all weekend, residents gathered at the churches and community centers and on street corners to share information, to strategize and mourn, to share this moment at once sadly familiar and like no other in their shared tragic history.

“You feel as if you’re not in the world right now,” said Marie S. Brevil, an artist and writer who is working on a Ph.D. in public health. “You can understand some things. If there’s rain, you can run to a house to get dry. But this, three million people displaced? Who can understand that? Who can know what to do? Everyone goes to bed restless, they’re thinking all the time about what they can do.”

Ms. Brevil was at a meeting of perhaps 100 government officials, community leaders, church members, ad hoc relief organizers and ordinary folks at Konbit Nèg Lakay, where the walls are filled with art and metal sculptures of Haitian scenes and the meeting room is dominated by a vivid tableau of an idealized Haiti — blue skies, dazzling splashes of yellow and red, palm trees and people at work in fecund fields. It was painted in a day in 2008 by visiting artists from Haiti as both art and affirmation.

At the meeting, everyone had a thought, a question, an agenda, a strategy, large or small — finding as many Creole speakers as possible for the county mental health hot line; the names of Web sites connecting victims in Haiti and relatives far away; the florists planning to provide flowers and ribbons in blue and red, the colors of Haiti’s flag, as a sign of solidarity; how to get local doctors and nurses and rescue workers to Haiti as quickly as possible; what supplies are needed and what are not.

There is some fortune in Haiti’s history of misfortune. Already in place are groups like the Ramapo Haitian Task Force and the Rockland County Haiti Relief Campaign, formed in recent years to respond to devastating storms that ravaged the nation. And with so much need even in good times, people who left Haiti long ago have never really left.

“We always have that bond, even when we’re away,” said Jean Elie Porchette, a car salesman and computer technician who has been working nonstop trying to raise relief aid and using his Facebook page as a networking site since the disaster. “All you hear is about the poverty, but Haitians are good people. I tell you Haitians care. We have heart. We have this sense of togetherness, and despite all the negative things, we’ll get through this together.”

Still, all that history can help only so much this time, when every Haitian here, from the mayor on down, has been affected in some way. Ms. Jasmin received word Thursday that her husband, who had been traveling in Haiti, survived the earthquake. And so, every encounter and greeting is really about only one thing.

“You O.K.?” a woman asked a friend Friday at Konbit Nèg Lakay.

“I’m O.K., darling.”

“I’ll keep you in my prayers.”

Confusion over Adoption Paperwork and Child Trafficking Led to Arrest of 10 Church Members from Idaho, USA

Ten U.S. church members from Idaho ran into trouble while trying to help some Haitian quake orphans. They are trying to help the new category of Haitian orphans. Yet, due to confusion over paperwork and proper authorization, they came to the radar of Haitian authorities who have mounted surveillance at the airport and elsewhere. These authorities are afraid that traffickers are lifting Haitian children from the country. They want to put a break to these illegal actions.

These church members from Idaho just want to help poor Haitian children who have been made orphans by the quake. Just like many of us, they were touched by the reading of articles on blogs, web sites and the live reports by CNN, ABC News, NBC and CBS or any other network. Bless their hearts for wanting to do good in a country that has seen so many troubles in the past few years.

We hope that this problem can be solved soon so as not to scare people who want to help get the country rebuilt. The US embassy in Haiti and the State Department have been informed of the incident. What needs to be made clear is that lost or displaced children may still have a chance to reconnect with their parents. So it would not be beneficial to take them out of the country without their approval.

Grim Quake News: My College Friend's 16 Family Members Perished in Port-au-Prince House

My college friend whom I have not seen for almost 10 years called me out of the blue. We were happy to reconnect with each other. These days, friends are calling friends to find out how they are and whether there was any death in the family. With much pain, she managed to inform me about the fate of her 16 cousins who lived in a two-story house in the capital.

None of them survived the quake. The house collapsed like pancakes.

Such horrible news continue to be heard in the capital. These days, more and more people are fleeing the city because of the bad smell of death that hangs everywhere. No wonder that all these people are still trapped in the ruins.

Sticky gas pedals caused more than 10 accidents all across the United States. U.S. congress wants to hold hearings to find out when Toyota knew about the problems. So far, Toyota is saying that it is due to condensation of the parts.

Toyota will explain what happened to its vehicles in a news conference next week. So far the company is buying ads from many newspapers and online sites.

In the meantime, Ford announced its first profit in many years now.

The quake caused many Haitians to perish in their own homes. They were buried alive in their rubbles. According to many eyewitnesses, many peasants are swearing that they will never use this kind of heavy, cement and block materials to build their homes. They want to return to their simple lives when houses were built of mostly woods and straw, materials which were found in abundance on their own property. After barely escaping or losing limbs trapped in cement and block rubbles, these Haitians are taking matters into their own hands.

What brought them to this realization?

Most houses that were constructed with readily available materials withstood the forces of the quake. These houses are intact. Yet, all the cement homes which were supposed to represent modernity collapsed. From Port-au-Prince to the smallest village where the quake hit, homes built with cement, brick and block, suffered major damage or were destroyed. A master engineer stated that the wood and metal sheet-covered homes to manage better the counter forces of the earthquake. As far as the cement homes are concerned, they were unable to absorb all the movement. Bricks or blocks pulverize and start the demolition.

Most Haitians have now learned a few lessons from the quake. While the cement, block or brick homes increased their protection against series of hurricanes, the same home do not fare well in the times of earthquake.

It goes without saying that in general, Haitians will return to simple life on the island. Most owners of homes built with cement often complain of the heat trapped inside these homes. During the summer months, they prefer to sleep outside especially when there is prolonged lack of electricity.

It may be the beginning of the adoption of building regulations which nobody cared about on the island.

L'eglise Baptiste de Bolosse and Le College Evangelique de Maranatha were damaged by the Jan. 12 quake. But the buildings still stand. One of the pastors who studied at the seminary informed me that the church has a fairly new building in Bolosse, Port au Prince. However, according to www.Crossworld.org, a major portion of the Seminary building was heavily damaged. A team of specialists will visit the premises to assess the situation. It was also reported that 2 students died.

All over Bolosse, there are various houses and businesses that were damaged.

U.S. House of Representatives Encourage you to Donate to Haiti and Allow You to Write it Off

U.S. House of Representatives have good news for donors. They passed a bill last Wednesday that will make donations made after Jan. 11 and before March 1 deductible for 2009.

So make sure you write off any cash donations made to relief efforts in Haiti on your 2009 income tax returns!

The Senate is expected to pass the bill too.

If you can donate, do so and claim your write off.

The residents of Ti Paradi (Little Paradise), Haiti received much needed relief when the navy brought them food and water. Ti Paradi was the site of a localized tsunami. The tsunami turned Ti Paradi into an instant hell for its residents who had to run back towards higher grounds. Now, if you visit Ti Paradi, you can find live trees in the middle of the ocean.

Congratulations to Tim Schwartz, developer and artist, for getting together with his developer friends to create www.haitianquake.com, an online lost-and-found site aimed at helping Haitians in and out of the country locate missing relatives.
HaitianQuake.com must have been a killerapp because it soon merged with Haiticrisis.appspot.com, a Google project. What is clear is that the techies and developers have realized the devastation an earthquake can produce. They wanted to help reconnect family members.

Once again, Congratulations for wanting to contribute something to this great cause!
